Army Reportedly Detains Human Rights Defender Lawrence Zongo in Jos After Hospital Visit

By Globalvoice Investigations

The Nigerian Army has reportedly detained human rights defender Lawrence Zongo after he visited a military hospital in Jos, Plateau State, to check on relatives who were injured in a reported gunmen attack in Bassa Local Government Area.

Zongo, described as a human rights defender and volunteer with Amnesty International, was reportedly arrested on Monday, October 5, 2026, while at a military facility within Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Rukuba Barracks, headquarters of the Nigerian Army 3 Division.

The circumstances surrounding his reported detention remain unclear, with no public explanation from the Army as of the time of filing this report.

Hospital Visit Followed Attack in Bassa

According to sources familiar with the incident, Zongo travelled to the military facility after relatives were reportedly attacked in Meyango, Bassa LGA, on Sunday night.

Sources said one of his first cousins died from injuries sustained during the attack before Zongo arrived at the hospital late Monday morning.

Rather than leaving the facility after visiting his injured relatives, Zongo was allegedly taken into military custody.

The sources claimed that he has remained detained without being formally charged and that his family and lawyers have allegedly been unable to gain access to him.

If confirmed, such a detention would raise significant questions about the legal basis for his arrest, his access to legal representation and whether proper procedures are being followed by the authorities.

Alleged Incommunicado Detention

Sources further alleged that Zongo has been held incommunicado, meaning that he has allegedly been denied regular contact with both his family and legal representatives.

However, these claims have not been independently verified, and it remains unclear where exactly Zongo is being held or whether investigators have formally opened a case against him.

The Nigerian Army has also not publicly disclosed the reason for the reported detention.

Smart Glasses Claim Emerges

Another claim surrounding the incident concerns the equipment Zongo was allegedly wearing when he entered the military facility.

Sources claimed that he was wearing Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses at the time and suggested that soldiers may have become concerned that the device could be used to record activities within the military facility.

That claim remains unverified.

There is currently no publicly available evidence establishing that the smart glasses were the reason for his reported arrest, making it important to distinguish the allegation from any confirmed explanation for the detention.

Army Yet to Explain Detention

The absence of an official explanation has left several key questions unanswered.

Why was Zongo detained after visiting relatives receiving treatment at the military facility? Was he questioned by military authorities? Was any device seized from him? Has he been accused of committing an offence? Has a formal investigation been opened? And has he been granted access to legal counsel?

These questions are particularly significant because the reported detainee is a human rights defender whose activities may involve documenting allegations of abuses, insecurity and violations of civilian rights.

At the same time, military authorities have legitimate security responsibilities within restricted military installations. If the Army suspected that Zongo had breached security protocols or attempted to record sensitive military activities, the specific basis for that suspicion should be established and communicated through lawful procedures.

Due Process at the Centre of the Case

The reported detention comes against the backdrop of continuing security concerns in Plateau State, where attacks on communities have repeatedly raised questions about civilian protection and the response of security agencies.

For human rights defenders, cases involving detention without publicly stated charges can also have a wider chilling effect, particularly where activists and volunteers are attempting to assist victims of violence.

But before conclusions are drawn, the central facts still need to be established: the legal grounds for Zongo's detention, the allegations against him, the location of his detention and whether he has been granted access to lawyers and family members.

The key question now is whether the Nigerian Army will publicly explain why Lawrence Zongo was detained and demonstrate that his case is being handled in accordance with Nigerian law and due-process guarantees.
