NAF Crash: SDP Suspends Campaign Nationwide as Adebayo Calls for Military Safety Reforms

By Globalvoice Investigations

The Adebayo Bugaje Presidential Campaign of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has suspended all national and state level campaign activities for one week following the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft crash that claimed the lives of all 25 passengers and crew members reportedly on board.

The suspension, which took effect immediately, covers rallies, town hall meetings, stakeholder engagements and media activities scheduled by the campaign.

The decision comes as Nigeria mourns the military personnel and other occupants who died when the NAF aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, Ondo State, on Monday, October 5, 2026.

SDP Puts Campaign on Hold

In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, Mark Adebayo, Head of the Media and Communications Directorate of the Adebayo Bugaje campaign, described the crash as a national tragedy that should temporarily take precedence over political activities.

The campaign said the suspension was intended not only as a mark of respect for the victims but also as an expression of solidarity with the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces of Nigeria.

According to the statement, presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo and his running mate, Usman Bugaje, extended their condolences to the Chief of the Air Staff, the leadership of the Nigerian Air Force and the families of those who died.

The campaign said the victims had made significant sacrifices in service to the country and urged Nigerians to stand with the bereaved families.

“In moments of such monumental national tragedy, politics must take a backseat to national mourning and deep reflection,” the campaign said.

Beyond Condolences: SDP Raises Military Safety Concerns

While suspending its political activities, the SDP campaign also used the tragedy to raise questions about the safety and welfare of Nigeria's military personnel.

The campaign called for comprehensive insurance coverage for members of the Armed Forces and other security agencies, arguing that personnel who routinely operate in high risk environments should have stronger institutional protection for themselves and their families.

It also called for regular and proper maintenance of military aircraft and other equipment, linking equipment reliability to the prevention of avoidable accidents.

That demand is likely to attract attention beyond the immediate mourning period, particularly because questions surrounding the maintenance and operational readiness of military aircraft have previously surfaced after aviation incidents involving security agencies.

What Happened in Igbokoda?

The aircraft went down in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State on Monday during a routine mission, with reports indicating that all 25 passengers and crew members aboard were killed.

The circumstances surrounding the crash remain subject to official investigation.

The Nigerian authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident, meaning the precise cause of the crash, the aircraft's operational condition, maintenance history, weather conditions and other possible contributing factors will need to be established before responsibility can be determined.

This distinction is important. While concerns about military equipment maintenance have been raised by political actors, the cause of the Igbokoda crash should not be conclusively attributed to mechanical failure or inadequate maintenance until investigators release their findings.

The Questions the Crash Raises

The tragedy has nevertheless reopened a wider question about the condition and safety of Nigeria's military aviation fleet.

If maintenance deficiencies are eventually established, the issue would extend beyond one aircraft or one accident. It would raise questions about maintenance budgets, procurement procedures, spare parts, technical inspections, aircraft age, contractor performance and the systems used to determine whether military aircraft are safe to fly.

The SDP's call for improved maintenance therefore places the crash within a broader debate about how Nigeria protects the personnel it depends on for national security.

For the families of the victims, however, the immediate concern remains mourning and accountability.

The suspension of campaign activities means the SDP will temporarily step away from the political contest to observe the national tragedy. But when the mourning period ends, a more difficult conversation may begin: was the Igbokoda crash an unavoidable operational tragedy, or does it expose deeper weaknesses in the maintenance, oversight and safety systems governing Nigeria's military aviation?
