Six Firearms Recovered From New York City Public Schools Since September

Six firearms have been recovered from New York City public schools in the United States since the beginning of the current school year in September, according to the union representing the city’s school safety officers.

The latest recoveries involved two separate incidents on Tuesday, when handguns were found at two public schools just hours apart.

The first incident occurred at Eximius College Prep Academy at approximately 11:15 a.m. A school safety officer was reportedly alerted that a 15-year-old student was wanted on an outstanding arrest warrant.

The teenager was located and allegedly found carrying a 9mm handgun along with a magazine containing more than 20 rounds of ammunition. Police subsequently took the student into custody.

Several hours later, at about 2:07 p.m., officers responded to Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology, where a 17-year-old student was reportedly found in possession of a handgun.

The student was also taken into custody.

Authorities have not released the identities of either teenager because they are minors.

According to the school safety officers’ union, the two incidents bring the total number of firearms recovered from New York City public schools since the start of the school year to six.

The discoveries have also renewed scrutiny over security arrangements at the two schools. Neither Eximius College Prep Academy nor Brooklyn High School for Law and Technology is equipped with metal detectors, according to reports.

Globalvoice contacted the New York City Department of Education for comment on the firearm recoveries and security measures at the schools, but no response had been provided at the time of publication.
