Afrobeats singer Austine Kelechi, popularly known as Tekno Miles, has defended the growing “brain rot content” trend, also referred to as the “Olodo Uprising,” arguing that goofy and entertaining content often resonates more with Nigerian audiences than intellectual material.
Tekno made the remarks during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, where he argued that intellectual content no longer attracts the same level of attention in Nigeria.
According to the ‘Pana’ hitmaker, comedy and entertainment have never been solely about intelligence, noting that popular Nigerian comedians such as Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, and the late John Okafor, better known as Mr Ibu, became widely loved because of their comic and sometimes goofy performances.
“Intellectual no dey work again. Wetin I go do with your intellect? I can watch Carter Efe for hours and just be laughing at him just being goofy because that’s interesting,” Tekno said.
He recalled the popularity of Osuofia and Mr Ibu, arguing that their appeal was largely rooted in their ability to make audiences laugh through their exaggerated and humorous behaviour.
“Back in the day, when you dey watch Osuofia and Mr Ibu, wetin make you been like them? No be the mumu wey dem dey mumu?” he added.
