Sowore: Adeboye Prayed for Me, Said My Political Path Is Honourable and Expressed Confidence in My ‘Triumph’
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has said the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, prayed for him during a private meeting and expressed confidence in what he described as Sowore’s eventual “triumph.”
Sowore disclosed this in a post on his X account on Sunday, following his attendance at a National Thanksgiving Service held at the RCCG headquarters in Ebute Metta, Lagos.
According to the AAC candidate, he attended the service at the invitation of the church alongside the party’s National Chairman, Pastor Samuel Ajeigbe.
Sowore Details Meeting With Adeboye
Sowore said he had a private conversation with Adeboye after the service, during which the cleric offered to pray for him.
“After the service, I had a private meeting and conversation with the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who offered to pray for me,” Sowore said.
He further claimed that Adeboye told him he closely follows his activities, described his political path as honourable and expressed confidence in his “triumph.”
“He stated that he follows my activities religiously, expressed certainty that my path is honorable, and said he is confident of my triumph,” Sowore added.
The remarks come amid Sowore’s continued political activities as a prominent opposition figure and presidential candidate of the AAC.
‘Our Second Meeting in 30 Years’
Sowore said his encounter with Adeboye was not their first meeting, noting that the two had previously met at the same RCCG venue about three decades ago.
According to him, their first encounter took place in 1996, shortly after he completed the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
Sowore said he met Adeboye at the time while mobilising young people against campus cultism and what he described as the unchecked activities of cult groups.
“Interestingly, this was my second meeting with Pastor Adeboye at the same venue. Our first meeting was in 1996, shortly after I completed my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC),” he said.
He added that the earlier meeting occurred while he was “mobilizing the unlicensed against deadly campus cultism and the free reigns of cult gangs.”
Sowore Thanks RCCG for Reception
Reflecting on Sunday's encounter, Sowore expressed appreciation for the reception he received from members of the church and for his private discussion with Adeboye.
“Thirty years later, we met again at the same place. I deeply appreciate the warm reception of members of the church, and our private conversation, and his prayers,” he said.
Sowore, however, stressed that his presence at the thanksgiving service should not be interpreted as a political campaign or an attempt to use the church platform for electoral purposes.
“It is important to state that my visit was not intended to promote a political agenda,” he said.
RCCG’s Political Connections
The RCCG headquarters in Ebute Metta has hosted national thanksgiving services attended by political leaders, government officials and other public figures.
The development also comes against the backdrop of the longstanding intersection between religion and public life in Nigeria.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is an ordained pastor of the RCCG, further highlighting the church’s visibility within the country’s political and public sphere.
Sowore’s account of his meeting with Adeboye, however, centres on the private conversation and prayer he says took place after the service, as well as the cleric’s reported assessment of his political journey.
