Teenager Shot Dead in Fresh Attack on Plateau Community as Security Concerns Rise

By Globalvoice

A teenage boy identified as Aliyu has reportedly been shot dead in Wereng community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, in a fresh attack that has heightened security concerns in the area.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 2pm on Thursday, October 1, 2026, according to preliminary information from sources familiar with the incident.

Aliyu was allegedly targeted by armed assailants before he was shot in the community.

Initial reports have attributed the attack to suspected armed Berom militia members, but the identity of the attackers, their motive and the circumstances surrounding the killing have not been independently established.

Residents have reportedly been urged to remain calm and refrain from circulating unverified information that could further inflame tensions in the community.

Fresh Violence Raises Security Concerns

The latest killing comes amid renewed security challenges in parts of Riyom and neighbouring Barkin Ladi Local Government Areas, where civilians have been killed in separate attacks in recent months.

In September, two people were reportedly killed in Tahoos, Riyom, during a series of attacks across Plateau State.

At the time, the Plateau State Police Command said it was gathering information on the incidents as security agencies worked to identify those responsible.

Wereng Has Recorded Previous Attacks

The latest incident also comes against the backdrop of previous attacks in Wereng and surrounding communities.

In July, nine members of a family were reportedly killed when gunmen attacked Wereng Camp and Kum communities in Riyom, according to reports citing residents and the Berom Youth Moulders Association.

Police authorities were reportedly unavailable for comment at the time.

The recurring attacks have raised concerns over the safety of rural communities in Plateau State, where longstanding tensions and cycles of violence have contributed to repeated loss of lives and displacement.

Security Agencies Intensify Response

Earlier in September, the Plateau State Government directed security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, inter-agency cooperation and preventive operations following renewed attacks in parts of the state.

The state's Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, said arrests had been made in connection with some recent attacks, while investigations were continuing.

Authorities are now expected to investigate the latest killing in Wereng, determine how Aliyu was killed and establish the identity of those responsible.

As of the time of publication, further official details from the police or other security agencies were still awaited.

The latest incident underscores the continuing security challenges confronting communities in Plateau State and the need for timely intelligence, effective preventive measures and accountability for attacks on civilians.
